AN OVERVIEW

AN
OVERVIEW

For many rural households, a Primary Health Centre is the first and most accessible point of care. Its ability to provide timely consultations, diagnostics, medicines, emergency support and appropriate referrals can shape what happens next for a patient.

Dr. Reddy’s Foundation works with district public health administrations to strengthen government Primary Health Centres.

Rather than create a parallel system, we improve the infrastructure, capabilities and operational processes of existing facilities so they can provide more reliable care to the communities they serve.

Our work supports the priorities of the National Health Mission and contributes to the broader goal of making quality healthcare available without placing an excessive financial burden on households.

WHY THIS
WORK MATTERS

WHY THIS
WORK MATTERS

Primary healthcare brings health promotion, prevention, diagnosis and treatment closer to where people live. The World Health Organization identifies it as the foundation of equitable, efficient and resilient health systems.

Yet significant gaps remain in the quality of facilities and the financial protection available to patients.

43 _. 4 ^%

Of India’s health expenditure was paid out of pocket by households.

63 _ ^%

Of assessed health facilities scored above 50% against Indian Public Health Standards.

These figures highlight the need to strengthen public health facilities and reduce the financial burden on households. Improving the availability and quality of primary healthcare can help families receive timely diagnosis and treatment closer to home, reducing travel costs and reliance on more expensive services.

OUR
INITIATIVES

OUR
INITIATIVES

Primary Healthcare Services

Dr. Reddy’s Foundation collaborates with district public health administrations to identify gaps and upgrade Primary Health Centres around the needs of each facility and its surrounding population.

The intervention focuses on eight areas:

  • Diagnostic services
  • Pharmacy management
  • Labour-room facilities
  • Staff capabilities
  • Patient-management technology
  • Emergency stabilisation and referral
  • Reliable water and power supply
  • Biomedical waste management

Together, these improvements strengthen the ability of PHCs to provide safer, more consistent outpatient, diagnostic, maternal and emergency care. They also help public health teams manage patients and facility resources more effectively.
