Tata Telecom Academy

With India’s growing literacy rate, its unemployment problem has become even more challenging. There is an insatiable demand for vocational training, especially amongst youth from semi-urban and rural areas. Though a large number of them pass out from various technical institutes every year, they do not find ready employment as they lack the right skill sets to make them truly employable.

To address this challenge, DRF and Tata Communications have jointly set up a ‘Telecom Training Academy’ at Mumbai, which trains financially disadvantaged youth from Class C / D towns in skill sets specific to the telecom sector.

The beneficiaries are selected from engineering colleges, polytechnics and ITIs (in the Computer Science, IT and Electronics & Telecommunication streams).

The total duration of the training program is two years. It begins with a 45-day classroom training session, during which the trainees are oriented to the telecom sector, introduced to basic technical aspects, and given basic IT skills and soft skills. The rest of the training program is divided into four modules of six months each, which includes on-the-job training in various field sites of Tata Communications across India.

The trainees receive a monthly stipend during their internship. On successful completion of the two-year program, they are awarded a certificate in ‘Field Telecom Engineering’ jointly by DRF and Tata Communications.
